Joseph E. Phelps holds the Reese Phifer Professorship in Advertising and Public Relations at The University of Alabama. His M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mass Communication are from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.A. in Communication and Business Administration is from Saint Norbert College. His primary research areas include consumer privacy concerns and Internet-facilitated consumer-to-consumer communication. He publishes in a variety of marketing and advertising journals and only recently in medical journals. He served as editor of volumes 1-3 of Frontiers of Direct & Interactive Marketing Research. He serves on the Editorial Review Boards of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of Interactive Advertising, the Journal of Advertising Education, the Journal of Current Issues & Research in Advertising, the Newspaper Research Journal, the International Journal of Internet Marketing and Advertising, and the International Journal of Integrated Marketing Communications. In 1999, the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation selected Phelps as the Outstanding Direct Marketing Educator. He served as Head of the Advertising Division (2001-2002) of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and as President of the American Academy of Advertising (2004-2005).
