Dean M. Krugman,( Ph.D., Institute of Communication Research, University of Illinois at Urbana) is a Professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia.  He has also served as Department Head and Senior Associate Dean for the Grady College.

Dean’s research includes audiences and advertising, new media and health communication. His work has appeared several journals including the Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Health Communication.   He has received research funding from the American Cancer Society, The Centers for Disease Control, the National Association of Broadcasters and the James Cox Center for Media Management. He served on the research and evaluation panel for the American Legacy Foundation’s “truth” campaign’s rural initiative.   

Dean was presented with the “Outstanding Contribution to Research Award,” (2002) by American Academy of Advertising. This award is designed to honor an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the discipline through a systematic and sustained program of published research. His study on audiences and advertising received the

“Outstanding Research Article Award,” from the Journal of Advertising (1995). He was a co- recipient of the “1990 Research Award,” from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine for a Journal of the American Medical Association article on adolescents and warnings in cigarette advertising.  Dean is a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Georgia. 

Dean is President-Elect of the American Academy of Advertising.  He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Advertising, the International Journal of Advertising and The Journal of Interactive Advertising and has served on the editorial review board for the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media. He received one of the inaugural “Outstanding Reviewer” awards by the Journal of Advertising for his contribution to the journal’s scholarship. Dean is a senior co-author of Advertising: Its Role in Modern Marketing. He served as a consultant to major corporations/institutions such as Caterpillar Inc., Texas Instruments, The Centers for Disease Control, U.S. Department of Justice and the attorney general of several states.
